Name Date

Read the Story

After David spoke with Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David. Jonathan loved him as his own soul. They made a covenant. Jonathan gave David his robe, clothing, sword, bow, and sash. Saul kept David with him. He set him over the men of war.

When the army came home, the women sang that Saul had slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. Saul was very angry. He asked what more David could have but the kingdom. The next day David played music. Saul threw his spear twice, but David escaped.

Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with David and had departed from Saul. David behaved wisely in all his ways. Saul hoped the Philistines would kill David, so he asked for a dangerous bride price. But David succeeded, and married Saul's daughter Michal, who loved him. Saul became David's enemy continually.

Memory Verse

“When he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

Love and Jealousy

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 18 shows two opposite responses to David. Jonathan, the king's son and heir, loved David as his own soul. He gave David his robe, armor, sword, bow, and sash, as if handing over his own place. His love was humble and generous.

Saul's response was jealousy. When the women sang that David had slain his ten thousands, Saul was angry and asked what more David could have but the kingdom. From that day on he watched David with suspicion. Twice he hurled his spear, and twice David escaped.

Saul tried to remove David by sending him into battle and by asking a dangerous bride price for his daughter, hoping the Philistines would kill him. Every plan failed, because the Lord was with David. David behaved wisely, all Israel and Judah loved him, and Saul's fear only grew.

The Soul of Jonathan

Name Date

Read and Think

The friendship of David and Jonathan is one of the great portraits of loyal love in Scripture. Jonathan's soul was knit with David's, and he loved him as his own soul. In a covenant, Jonathan gave David his robe, clothing, sword, bow, and sash. As the crown prince, he was in effect honoring David as the one whom God would raise up, even above himself.

Saul's heart moved in the opposite direction. The women's song, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands, wounded his pride. He was very angry, and from that day forward he eyed David. When an evil spirit from God came on him, he threw his spear at David, saying he would pin David to the wall. David escaped twice. Saul feared David because Yahweh was with him and had departed from Saul.

Saul's strategies grew more calculated. He offered Merab and then Michal in marriage, demanding a bride price that he hoped would make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. Instead David succeeded doubly, and the Lord's favor became even clearer. The chapter repeats that David behaved himself wisely and that Yahweh was with him. Jealousy made Saul David's enemy continually; love made Jonathan David's covenant friend.
