The Battle Is Yahweh's

Name Date

Read the Story

The Philistines and Israel lined up on two mountains with the valley of Elah between them. Goliath of Gath was six cubits and a span tall. He wore bronze armor. He defied the armies of Israel. He asked for a man to fight him. For forty days, morning and evening, Saul and all Israel were dismayed and greatly afraid.

Jesse sent David with grain, bread, and cheese for his brothers. David heard Goliath. He asked who this Philistine was, to defy the armies of the living God. His brother Eliab was angry with him. But David told Saul he would fight. David said, Yahweh, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.

Saul put his armor on David. But David could not walk in it. He took his staff, five smooth stones from the brook, and his sling. Goliath despised him. David said he came in the name of Yahweh of Armies, for the battle is Yahweh's. David slung a stone, and it struck the Philistine in the forehead. He fell on his face, and the Philistines fled.

Memory Verse

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

In the Name of the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

For forty days, Goliath, a champion from Gath, defied Israel. He was huge and covered in bronze armor, with a spear like a weaver's beam. Saul, the tallest man in Israel and the one who should have fought, was as afraid as everyone else.

David came from tending sheep to bring food to his brothers. He saw the situation differently. To him, Goliath was not defying an army but the living God. Eliab accused David of pride, and Saul said he was only a youth. But David remembered how the Lord had delivered him from the lion and the bear.

David refused Saul's armor and went with his shepherd's staff, sling, and five smooth stones. He told Goliath that he came in the name of Yahweh of Armies, so that all the earth would know there is a God in Israel. One stone struck Goliath's forehead, and he fell. David won with no sword in his hand, because the battle is the Lord's.

1 Samuel 17 · Grade 5

The Battle Is the Lord's

Name Date

Read and Think

Goliath's description is meant to overwhelm: six cubits and a span tall, a bronze coat of mail weighing five thousand shekels, and a spear head of six hundred shekels of iron. His challenge was to settle the war by single combat. For forty days, Saul, who stood head and shoulders above Israel, did nothing, and all Israel was dismayed and greatly afraid.

David arrived on an errand from his father, carrying food to his brothers. Where others saw a giant, David saw an uncircumcised Philistine defying the armies of the living God. Eliab's angry accusation and Saul's doubt did not move him. David's courage rested on God's past faithfulness: Yahweh, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.

Refusing Saul's armor, David went out with a staff, five smooth stones, and a sling. Goliath came with sword, spear, and javelin; David came in the name of Yahweh of Armies. His purpose was that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that Yahweh doesn't save with sword and spear; for the battle is Yahweh's. One stone struck Goliath, and he fell on his face. The chapter teaches that victory belongs to God, who works through humble faith.
