Jonathan and His Helper

Name Date

Read the Story

Jonathan was Saul's son. He had a young man who carried his armor. Jonathan said God can save with many or with few. They went out to the Philistine camp.

They climbed up the rocks on their hands and feet. God helped them. The ground shook. The Philistines were afraid and ran away.

Saul had said no one could eat until evening. Jonathan did not hear it. He ate a little honey. Saul was angry. But the people would not let Jonathan be hurt. He had worked with God that day.

Memory Verse

Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us, for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few.”

By Many or by Few

Name Date

Read the Story

Jonathan said to his armor bearer that they should go over to the Philistine garrison. It may be that the Lord would work for them, for nothing could stop the Lord from saving by many or by few. His armor bearer said he was with him with all his heart.

They chose a sign: if the Philistines said come up, the Lord had given them into their hand. The Philistines said come up, so Jonathan climbed on his hands and feet. The Lord sent a great trembling, the earth quaked, and the Philistine army melted away. The Lord saved Israel that day.

Saul had made the people swear not to eat until evening, and they grew faint. Jonathan had not heard and ate honey from his rod, and his eyes brightened. Later Saul said Jonathan must die. But the people rescued him, saying he had worked with God today.

Memory Verse

Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us, for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few.”

Faith and a Foolish Oath

Name Date

Read and Think

While Saul sat under a pomegranate tree with six hundred men, Jonathan acted in faith. He told his armor bearer that the Lord was not limited by numbers. The two climbed the cliffs to the Philistine garrison. God answered their faith with a great trembling and an earthquake, and the Philistines were thrown into confusion.

Saul, meanwhile, made a rash oath, cursing anyone who ate before evening so that he could be avenged on his enemies. The tired soldiers grew faint. Jonathan, unaware, ate honey and was refreshed. He said his father had troubled the land, because the people would have won a greater victory if they had eaten.

When God did not answer Saul one day, Saul used the lot to find the guilty one, and it fell on Jonathan. Saul said Jonathan must die. But the people rescued him, because he had worked with God that day. Saul's oath showed more concern for his own revenge than for his people.

No Restraint on Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 14 sets two leaders side by side. Saul stayed at the edge of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree, with a priest and the ephod near him. Jonathan went out with only his armor bearer, saying, It may be that Yahweh will work for us, for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few. His faith rested on God's character, not on human strength.

Jonathan sought a sign, and when the Philistines invited them up, he climbed the crag on hands and feet. God sent a trembling in the camp, the earth quaked, and confusion spread until the Philistines struck one another. Israelites who had hidden came out. The narrator says plainly that Yahweh saved Israel that day.

Saul's oath, cursing any man who ate food before evening, weakened his own troops. Jonathan, who had not heard it, tasted honey and was refreshed. When God was silent, Saul cast lots, which fell on Jonathan, and Saul swore he must die. The people resisted: Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? They rescued him. Saul's zeal looked religious, but it was rash, self-centered, and harmful.

Show What You Know

  1. How are the two leaders contrasted?

  2. On what did Jonathan's faith rest?

  3. What does the narrator say plainly?

  4. How is Saul's zeal described?
