1 Samuel 14 · Grade 3
By Many or by Few
Read the Story
Jonathan said to his armor bearer that they should go over to the Philistine garrison. It may be that the Lord would work for them, for nothing could stop the Lord from saving by many or by few. His armor bearer said he was with him with all his heart.
They chose a sign: if the Philistines said come up, the Lord had given them into their hand. The Philistines said come up, so Jonathan climbed on his hands and feet. The Lord sent a great trembling, the earth quaked, and the Philistine army melted away. The Lord saved Israel that day.
Saul had made the people swear not to eat until evening, and they grew faint. Jonathan had not heard and ate honey from his rod, and his eyes brightened. Later Saul said Jonathan must die. But the people rescued him, saying he had worked with God today.
Memory Verse
“Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us, for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few.””
