Far Be It From Me

Name Date

Read the Story

Samuel stood before all Israel and said he had listened to them and made a king over them. He asked whose ox or donkey he had taken, whom he had cheated, or from whom he had taken a bribe. The people said he had not cheated or oppressed them.

Samuel reminded them how the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, and how, when their fathers forgot God and cried out, He sent leaders to save them. Yet when Nahash came, they asked for a king, though the Lord was their king. If they and their king followed the Lord, it would be well.

It was wheat harvest, when rain did not fall. Samuel called to the Lord, and He sent thunder and rain. The people greatly feared and asked Samuel to pray for them. Samuel told them not to turn away but to serve the Lord with all their heart. He said, Far be it from me that I should sin against Yahweh in ceasing to pray for you.

Memory Verse

“Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Yahweh in ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.”

A Faithful Leader's Last Words

Name Date

Read and Think

As Saul's reign began, Samuel gave a farewell speech. First he asked Israel to witness his honesty. He had taken no ox, no donkey, and no bribe. The people agreed that he had not cheated or oppressed anyone. Samuel's life stood in contrast to his sons and to the king who would take.

Samuel then retold Israel's story. Again and again they forgot the Lord, suffered, cried out, and were rescued by leaders the Lord sent. Asking for a king was another case of forgetting their true King. Still, if both people and king feared and obeyed the Lord, all would be well.

To make the point unforgettable, Samuel prayed, and the Lord sent thunder and rain during the dry wheat harvest. The people saw their evil and begged Samuel to pray. He told them not to fear, not to chase vain things, and to remember the great things God had done. He promised to keep praying and teaching the good and right way.

1 Samuel 12 · Grade 5

Consider What Great Things He Has Done

Name Date

Read and Think

Samuel's speech at Gilgal marks the transition from the judges to the kings. He first established his integrity before the Lord and His anointed: no ox, no donkey, no fraud, no bribe. The people testified that he had not defrauded or oppressed them. Unlike the king who would take, Samuel had given.

He then pleaded with Israel by recounting the Lord's righteous acts, from Moses and Aaron through the judges. The pattern was always the same: Israel forgot Yahweh, was handed to enemies, cried out, and was delivered. Faced with Nahash, they demanded a king instead of trusting the Lord their king. Yet God would still bless them if they and their king followed Him; if they rebelled, His hand would be against them.

The thunder and rain at wheat harvest exposed the people's sin, and they asked Samuel to pray that they might not die. Samuel's answer holds grace and warning together: do not be afraid; do not turn aside after vain things; Yahweh will not forsake his people for his great name's sake. Samuel committed to keep praying and instructing them. The chapter ends with the core call: Only fear Yahweh, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things he has done for you.

  2. How was Samuel unlike the king who would take?

  4. What is the core call at the end of the chapter?
