As One Man

Name Date

Read the Story

Nahash the Ammonite camped against Jabesh Gilead. The men of Jabesh offered to serve him. But he made a cruel threat that would shame all Israel. The elders asked for seven days to send men through Israel.

The messengers came to Gibeah, and the people wept. Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. He heard, and God's Spirit came mightily on him. His anger burned. He sent pieces of oxen through Israel as a warning. All must come out after Saul and Samuel. The fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

Saul split the army into three groups. They struck the Ammonites in the morning watch, and the city was saved. The people wanted to put to death those who had despised Saul. But Saul said no man would be put to death that day, for the Lord had rescued Israel. They went to Gilgal, made Saul king, and rejoiced greatly.

Saul's Finest Hour

Name Date

Read and Think

Nahash the Ammonite besieged Jabesh Gilead. When the city asked for a treaty, he offered terms meant to disgrace all Israel. Confident no one would help, he even allowed them seven days to seek rescue.

Saul, though already chosen as king, was still plowing his fields. When he heard the news, God's Spirit came mightily on him. He cut up a yoke of oxen and sent the pieces through Israel, warning that the same would be done to the oxen of anyone who did not follow. The fear of the Lord fell on the people, and a great army gathered.

Saul attacked at dawn and saved the city. When some wanted to execute the men who had scorned him, Saul showed mercy and gave credit to God: the Lord had rescued Israel. At Gilgal they renewed the kingdom, offered peace offerings, and Saul and all Israel rejoiced greatly.

Victory and Mercy

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 11 shows Saul at his best. Nahash the Ammonite threatened Jabesh Gilead with terms designed to bring reproach on all Israel. The city's request for seven days shows how weak and divided Israel was. Nahash expected no one to come.

The news reached Gibeah, where Saul was still working as a farmer. God's Spirit came mightily on Saul, recalling the judges whom God raised up in crisis. Saul's summons, the pieces of a yoke of oxen sent throughout Israel, was a vivid call to unity. The fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out as one man, a mustered army of hundreds of thousands at Bezek.

Saul's victory at the morning watch was decisive. Then came a test of character. The people demanded death for those who had asked, Shall Saul reign over us? Saul answered, No man shall be put to death today; for today Yahweh has rescued Israel. Samuel led the people to Gilgal to renew the kingdom, and they rejoiced greatly. Saul's humility and mercy here make his later decline all the more tragic.

  1. What did the city's request for seven days show?

  2. Whom does God's Spirit coming on Saul recall?

  3. What did Saul say when the people demanded death for his critics?

  4. Why does Saul's later decline seem tragic?
