1 Samuel 11 · Grade 3
As One Man
Read the Story
Nahash the Ammonite camped against Jabesh Gilead. The men of Jabesh offered to serve him. But he made a cruel threat that would shame all Israel. The elders asked for seven days to send men through Israel.
The messengers came to Gibeah, and the people wept. Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. He heard, and God's Spirit came mightily on him. His anger burned. He sent pieces of oxen through Israel as a warning. All must come out after Saul and Samuel. The fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out as one man.
Saul split the army into three groups. They struck the Ammonites in the morning watch, and the city was saved. The people wanted to put to death those who had despised Saul. But Saul said no man would be put to death that day, for the Lord had rescued Israel. They went to Gilgal, made Saul king, and rejoiced greatly.
