Another Heart

Read the Story

Samuel took a vial of oil, poured it on Saul's head, and kissed him. He told Saul that the Lord had anointed him to be prince over His inheritance. Then he gave Saul signs. Men would tell him the donkeys were found. Three men would give him two loaves. A band of prophets would meet him.

Samuel said the Spirit of the Lord would come mightily on Saul, and he would be turned into another man. When Saul turned to leave, God gave him another heart, and all the signs happened that day. Saul prophesied with the prophets, and people asked, Is Saul also among the prophets?

Samuel called the people to Mizpah. He reminded them that by asking for a king they had rejected their God, who saved them. The tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot, then Saul. But when they looked, Saul was hidden among the baggage. The Lord showed them where he was. The people shouted, Long live the king!

Hidden Among the Baggage

Name Date

Read and Think

Samuel anointed Saul privately with oil and kissed him, telling him the Lord had anointed him to be prince over His inheritance. To confirm it, Samuel gave three signs: news of the donkeys, three men with gifts of bread, and a band of prophets. God gave Saul another heart, and every sign came true that day.

When Saul met the prophets, God's Spirit came mightily on him, and he prophesied. People who knew him were amazed. Yet when his uncle asked what Samuel had said, Saul told only about the donkeys. He said nothing about the kingdom.

At Mizpah, Samuel reminded Israel that they had rejected the God who saved them. Then the tribes came near, and Saul was taken by lot. But he had hidden himself among the baggage. When they brought him out, he stood taller than everyone. Some worthless men despised him, but Saul held his peace.

A Changed Heart and a Hidden King

Name Date

Read and Think

Samuel's private anointing of Saul with a vial of oil marked him as prince over the Lord's inheritance. Three signs followed to confirm Samuel's word, ending with a band of prophets at Gibeah. Samuel promised that the Spirit of Yahweh would come mightily on Saul and he would be turned into another man. Then Saul was to wait seven days at Gilgal for Samuel.

God gave Saul another heart, and all the signs came to pass that day. Saul prophesied, giving rise to the proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets? Yet Saul kept the matter of the kingdom secret from his uncle. Whether out of humility or uncertainty, he did not yet step forward.

At Mizpah, Samuel framed the public selection with a rebuke: Israel had rejected the God who saved them out of all their calamities. The lot fell on Benjamin, then the family of Matri, then Saul, but he had hidden among the baggage. The Lord Himself revealed his hiding place. Brought out, Saul stood head and shoulders above the people, and they shouted, Long live the king! Samuel wrote the rules of the kingdom in a book. Some men despised Saul, but he held his peace.
