1 Samuel 10 · Grade 5

A Changed Heart and a Hidden King

Name Date

Read and Think

Samuel's private anointing of Saul with a vial of oil marked him as prince over the Lord's inheritance. Three signs followed to confirm Samuel's word, ending with a band of prophets at Gibeah. Samuel promised that the Spirit of Yahweh would come mightily on Saul and he would be turned into another man. Then Saul was to wait seven days at Gilgal for Samuel.

God gave Saul another heart, and all the signs came to pass that day. Saul prophesied, giving rise to the proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets? Yet Saul kept the matter of the kingdom secret from his uncle. Whether out of humility or uncertainty, he did not yet step forward.

At Mizpah, Samuel framed the public selection with a rebuke: Israel had rejected the God who saved them out of all their calamities. The lot fell on Benjamin, then the family of Matri, then Saul, but he had hidden among the baggage. The Lord Himself revealed his hiding place. Brought out, Saul stood head and shoulders above the people, and they shouted, Long live the king! Samuel wrote the rules of the kingdom in a book. Some men despised Saul, but he held his peace.
