Read and Think

Elkanah, a man from the hill country of Ephraim, went up each year to worship the Lord of Armies at Shiloh. His wife Hannah was loved but childless, and her rival Peninnah provoked her severely. Year after year Hannah wept and would not eat, even though Elkanah tried to comfort her.

In bitterness of soul, Hannah prayed silently at the temple and made a vow: if God would look on her affliction and give her a son, she would give him to the Lord for life, and no razor would touch his head. Eli the priest first misread her prayer, but then sent her away in peace with a blessing. She ate, and her face was no longer sad, even before anything had changed.

The Lord remembered Hannah, and she bore Samuel, a name she linked to asking him of the Lord. Once he was weaned, she brought him to Shiloh with three bulls, flour, and wine. She told Eli that the Lord had given her petition, so she had given her son to the Lord for as long as he lived. The story shows that God hears the prayers of hurting people.
