Pouring Out Her Soul

Name Date

Read and Think

Elkanah loved Hannah and gave her a double portion at the yearly sacrifice. But Hannah had no children, and her rival Peninnah provoked her year after year. Elkanah asked her why she wept, and whether he was not better to her than ten sons.

Hannah went to the temple in bitterness of soul and prayed, weeping. She vowed that if the Lord of Armies gave her a son, she would give him to the Lord all the days of his life. Eli misjudged her silent prayer at first. Hannah told him she had poured out her soul before the Lord. Eli blessed her and asked God to grant her petition.

The Lord remembered Hannah. She named her son Samuel, because she had asked him of the Lord. After he was weaned, she brought him to Shiloh with an offering and kept her vow. She told Eli she was the woman who had stood there praying.
