1 Samuel 1 · Grade 3
Asked of the Lord
Read the Story
Elkanah had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. Every year the family went to Shiloh to worship. Peninnah teased Hannah until she cried and would not eat.
At the temple Hannah prayed with tears. She made a vow. If God gave her a son, she would give him to the Lord all his life. Eli the priest watched her lips move with no sound. At first he thought something was wrong with her. Then he blessed her, and her face was not sad anymore.
God remembered Hannah, and she had a son. She named him Samuel, because she had asked the Lord for him. When he was old enough, she brought him to Eli at Shiloh. She said the Lord had given her what she asked, so she gave her son to the Lord.
Memory Verse
“When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of Yahweh.””
