A Second Visit

Name Date

Read the Story

After Solomon finished building God's house and his own house, God appeared to him a second time, as He had at Gibeon. God said that He had heard Solomon's prayer. He had made the house holy and put His name there forever.

God told Solomon to walk before Him as David did, with a true heart. Then his family would always sit on the throne. But if they served other gods, Israel would be cut off from the land.

Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in Galilee. Hiram did not like them. Solomon built up many cities, such as Hazor and Gezer. He also built a fleet of ships. Hiram sent sailors who knew the sea. They sailed to Ophir and brought back gold to King Solomon.

Memory Verse

Yahweh said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before me. I have made this house holy, which you have built, to put my name there forever; and my eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.

A Promise and a Warning

Name Date

Read and Think

When Solomon had finished building, God appeared to him a second time. God said He had heard Solomon's prayer and made the house holy, putting His name there forever. God's eyes and His heart would be there always.

Then God gave a promise and a warning. Solomon must walk with a true heart like David and keep God's laws. Then his throne would last forever. But what if he or his sons served other gods? Then God would cut Israel off from the land. The temple would become a heap of ruins. People passing by would ask why. They would answer that the people had left the Lord.

The chapter then shows Solomon's building and trade. He fortified Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, Gezer, and other cities. Pharaoh's daughter moved into her own house. Three times a year, Solomon offered burnt offerings on the altar he had built. With Hiram's help, he built ships that sailed to Ophir and brought back a great amount of gold.

Show What You Know

  1. Where would God's eyes and heart be?

  2. What would happen if the people served other gods?

  3. How often did Solomon offer burnt offerings on the altar?

  4. What did the ships bring back from Ophir?

Think About It

  1. God said His eyes and heart would be at His house. How does it help to know God watches over His people?

  2. God gave Solomon a clear warning. How can God's warnings in the Bible protect you?

Memory Verse

Yahweh said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before me. I have made this house holy, which you have built, to put my name there forever; and my eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.

Covenant Blessing and Covenant Warning

Name Date

Read and Think

God's second appearance to Solomon answered the prayer of chapter 8. God had heard, had consecrated the house, and had placed His name there forever. His eyes and His heart would be there perpetually. Yet the Lord immediately set the gift inside the covenant. God's presence would stay a blessing only if the king walked in integrity of heart and uprightness.

The warning is direct. If Solomon or his sons turned from following God and served other gods, Israel would be cut off from the land. The house would become a heap that made passersby hiss. They would say that the people forsook Yahweh their God, who brought them out of Egypt. Later chapters in Kings will show how this warning came true.

The rest of the chapter reports Solomon's achievements. He built the Millo and the wall of Jerusalem, and fortified Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. He built store cities and cities for chariots. He offered sacrifices three times a year. His ships, with sailors sent by Hiram, sailed to Ophir and brought back four hundred twenty talents of gold. Hiram was not pleased with the twenty cities Solomon gave him, a hint that not all was well. In the New Testament, Jesus warns that a house built on sand will fall, but one built on obeying His words will stand (Matthew 7:24-27).

Show What You Know

  1. What did God's second appearance answer?

  2. What would passersby say if the house became a heap?

  3. How much gold did the ships bring from Ophir?

  4. What did Jesus warn about in the New Testament?
