1 Kings 9 · Grade 4
A Promise and a Warning
Read and Think
When Solomon had finished building, God appeared to him a second time. God said He had heard Solomon's prayer and made the house holy, putting His name there forever. God's eyes and His heart would be there always.
Then God gave a promise and a warning. Solomon must walk with a true heart like David and keep God's laws. Then his throne would last forever. But what if he or his sons served other gods? Then God would cut Israel off from the land. The temple would become a heap of ruins. People passing by would ask why. They would answer that the people had left the Lord.
The chapter then shows Solomon's building and trade. He fortified Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, Gezer, and other cities. Pharaoh's daughter moved into her own house. Three times a year, Solomon offered burnt offerings on the altar he had built. With Hiram's help, he built ships that sailed to Ophir and brought back a great amount of gold.
