Solomon's Prayer

Name Date

Read the Story

When the temple was finished, Solomon called the leaders of Israel. The priests carried the ark into the most holy place. They set it under the wings of the cherubim. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses put there.

When the priests came out, a cloud filled the house. They could not stand to serve, because the glory of the Lord filled the house. Solomon blessed the people and praised God for keeping His promise to David.

Then Solomon spread out his hands toward heaven and prayed. He said there is no God like the Lord in heaven or on earth. He asked God to listen when His people prayed toward this house. He asked God to forgive them when they turned back. He even asked God to hear foreigners who came to pray. Then the people held a feast for fourteen days. They went home joyful.

Memory Verse

“Blessed be Yahweh, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.

A House of Prayer

Name Date

Read and Think

Solomon gathered all Israel for the dedication of the temple. The priests carried the ark of the covenant into the most holy place. Inside it were only the two stone tablets from Mount Sinai. When the priests came out, a cloud filled the house, and the glory of the Lord was so great that they could not stand to serve.

Solomon knew that even the highest heaven could not contain God. A house built by hands could not hold Him. Yet Solomon asked God to watch over this house. He prayed for many needs. He prayed for times when people sin against a neighbor. He prayed for times when no rain falls, and when famine or sickness comes. Each time he asked God to hear and forgive.

Solomon also prayed for foreigners who would come to pray. He wanted all the peoples of the earth to know God. Then he stood and blessed the assembly. He said that not one word of all God's good promises had failed. He urged the people to keep their hearts fully true to God. They celebrated for fourteen days with joy.

Dedication of the Temple

Name Date

Read and Think

The dedication took place in the seventh month at the feast. Priests and Levites brought the ark, the tent of meeting, and the holy vessels up to the temple. The ark held only the two stone tablets of the covenant made at Horeb. As the priests came out, the cloud filled the house, just as God's glory had filled the tabernacle in Moses' day. God showed that He accepted the house.

Solomon's prayer is one of the great prayers of Scripture. He confessed that God keeps covenant and loving kindness. He asked an honest question: will God really dwell on earth? Heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him. Still, he asked God to hear prayers made toward this place. Seven requests follow, covering sin against neighbors, defeat, drought, famine, foreigners, war, and exile. In each, Solomon assumed that people would sin and asked God to forgive when they repented.

The prayer reaches beyond Israel. Solomon asked God to hear foreigners, so that all peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh himself is God. There is no one else. He blessed the people and declared that not one word of God's good promise had failed. The people went home joyful in their hearts. In the New Testament, Jesus says His Father's house shall be called a house of prayer (Matthew 21:13).
