1 Kings 8 · Grade 5
Dedication of the Temple
Read and Think
The dedication took place in the seventh month at the feast. Priests and Levites brought the ark, the tent of meeting, and the holy vessels up to the temple. The ark held only the two stone tablets of the covenant made at Horeb. As the priests came out, the cloud filled the house, just as God's glory had filled the tabernacle in Moses' day. God showed that He accepted the house.
Solomon's prayer is one of the great prayers of Scripture. He confessed that God keeps covenant and loving kindness. He asked an honest question: will God really dwell on earth? Heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him. Still, he asked God to hear prayers made toward this place. Seven requests follow, covering sin against neighbors, defeat, drought, famine, foreigners, war, and exile. In each, Solomon assumed that people would sin and asked God to forgive when they repented.
The prayer reaches beyond Israel. Solomon asked God to hear foreigners, so that all peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh himself is God. There is no one else. He blessed the people and declared that not one word of God's good promise had failed. The people went home joyful in their hearts. In the New Testament, Jesus says His Father's house shall be called a house of prayer (Matthew 21:13).
