The Bronze Worker

Name Date

Read the Story

Solomon built his own house over thirteen years. He also built the House of the Forest of Lebanon, a hall for his throne where he judged, and a house for Pharaoh's daughter. All were made of costly cut stones and cedar.

Solomon sent for Hiram from Tyre. His mother was from the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a worker in bronze. Hiram was filled with wisdom and skill. He made two bronze pillars for the porch of the temple. He named one Jachin and the other Boaz.

Hiram cast a great round basin called the sea. It rested on twelve oxen, three facing each direction. He made ten bronze stands with basins, and pots, shovels, and bowls. Solomon made the golden altar, the golden table, and ten golden lampstands. Then he brought in the silver and gold that David had dedicated.

Memory Verse

“Thus all the work that King Solomon did in Yahweh’s house was finished. Solomon brought in the things which David his father had dedicated—the silver, the gold, and the vessels—and put them in the treasuries of Yahweh’s house.”

Skill Used for God

Name Date

Read and Think

Solomon spent thirteen years on his own palace buildings. They included the House of the Forest of Lebanon with its rows of cedar pillars, the Hall of Pillars, and the Hall of Judgment, where he sat to judge. Everything was built of costly stones, cut to measure and sawed with saws.

For the bronze work, Solomon brought Hiram from Tyre. Hiram was the son of a widow of Naphtali, and he was filled with wisdom, understanding, and skill. He cast two bronze pillars for the temple porch, decorated with lilies and rows of pomegranates. He named the right pillar Jachin and the left pillar Boaz.

Hiram also cast the sea, a huge bronze basin standing on twelve oxen. He made ten bronze stands with wheels, ten basins, and many pots, shovels, and bowls. Solomon made the golden furniture for inside the temple: the altar, the table for the bread of the presence, and ten lampstands. So all the work for the Lord's house was finished.

Craftsmanship for the House of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 7 begins with Solomon's palace complex, built over thirteen years. The House of the Forest of Lebanon had forty-five cedar pillars. There was a Hall of Pillars, a Hall of Judgment paneled with cedar, Solomon's own house, and a house for Pharaoh's daughter. The writer notes that the temple took seven years while the palace took thirteen. Readers can compare where Solomon put his time and wealth.

The bronze work came from Hiram, son of a widow of Naphtali and a man of Tyre. Like Bezalel in the days of the tabernacle, he was filled with wisdom, understanding, and skill. He cast two bronze pillars eighteen cubits high, crowned with lily work and pomegranates. He named them Jachin and Boaz. Many explain these names as He establishes and In Him is strength.

Hiram cast the sea, ten cubits across, resting on twelve oxen facing the four directions, for the priests to wash. Ten wheeled stands carried basins of water. Solomon overlaid the inner furnishings with gold: the altar of incense, the table for the bread of the presence, and ten lampstands. Finally he placed David's dedicated treasures in the temple storerooms. In the New Testament, Paul says each believer is like a builder who must take care how he builds on the foundation, which is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:10-11).

  1. How many cedar pillars did the House of the Forest of Lebanon have?

  2. Who was Hiram compared to?

  3. What was the sea used for?

  4. What did Solomon place in the temple storerooms?
