The Temple Is Built

Name Date

Read the Story

Four hundred eighty years after Israel left Egypt, Solomon began to build the house of the Lord. It was long, wide, and high, with a porch in front and rooms around the sides. The stones were made ready at the quarry, so no hammer or ax was heard in the house while it was built.

God's word came to Solomon. If he walked in God's statutes and kept His commandments, God would keep His promise to David. God said He would live among the children of Israel and not forsake them.

Solomon lined the walls with cedar, so no stone was seen. He made an inner room, the most holy place, for the ark of the covenant. He covered it with pure gold. Two large cherubim of olive wood stood there with their wings touching. The walls and doors were carved with cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. It took seven years to finish.

I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.”

I Will Dwell Among Them

Name Date

Read and Think

In the fourth year of his reign, four hundred eighty years after the exodus, Solomon began to build the house of the Lord. It was sixty cubits long and twenty cubits wide, with a porch in front and side rooms built around it in three stories. The stones were prepared at the quarry, so no hammer, ax, or iron tool was heard while it was being built.

In the middle of the work, God spoke. The beautiful building was not enough by itself. If Solomon walked in God's statutes and kept His commandments, God would keep His word to David. Then God said, I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.

Inside, cedar covered every wall, carved with gourds and open flowers. The inner sanctuary, the most holy place, was a perfect cube covered with pure gold. Two olive wood cherubim, each ten cubits high, spread their wings across it. Even the floor was overlaid with gold. The house was finished in the eighth month of the eleventh year, after seven years of work.

The House of the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 6 dates the temple's start to four hundred eighty years after the exodus, linking the building to God's rescue from Egypt. The house was sixty cubits long, twenty wide, and thirty high, with a porch and a three-story structure of side rooms. The stones were dressed at the quarry, so the site stayed quiet; no hammer, ax, or iron tool was heard. The quiet fit the holiness of the place.

At the center of the chapter is God's word to Solomon. The splendor of the building would not secure God's presence. God tied His promise to obedience: if Solomon walked in His statutes and kept His commandments, God would fulfill His word to David and dwell among Israel. God's presence was a gift of grace received through faithful living, not something earned by gold.

The interior was rich with meaning. Cedar paneling carved with gourds and open flowers hid every stone. The most holy place, a gold-covered cube, waited for the ark. Two cherubim of olive wood stretched their wings from wall to wall. Carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and flowers recalled the garden of Eden, where people once lived close to God. In the New Testament, John writes that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14).

Show What You Know

  1. What did the date link the building to?

  2. What did God tie His promise to?

  3. What did the carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and flowers recall?

  4. What does John write about the Word?
