The House of the Lord
Read and Think
Chapter 6 dates the temple's start to four hundred eighty years after the exodus, linking the building to God's rescue from Egypt. The house was sixty cubits long, twenty wide, and thirty high, with a porch and a three-story structure of side rooms. The stones were dressed at the quarry, so the site stayed quiet; no hammer, ax, or iron tool was heard. The quiet fit the holiness of the place.
At the center of the chapter is God's word to Solomon. The splendor of the building would not secure God's presence. God tied His promise to obedience: if Solomon walked in His statutes and kept His commandments, God would fulfill His word to David and dwell among Israel. God's presence was a gift of grace received through faithful living, not something earned by gold.
The interior was rich with meaning. Cedar paneling carved with gourds and open flowers hid every stone. The most holy place, a gold-covered cube, waited for the ark. Two cherubim of olive wood stretched their wings from wall to wall. Carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and flowers recalled the garden of Eden, where people once lived close to God. In the New Testament, John writes that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14).
