Preparing a Place for God's Name

Name Date

Read and Think

Solomon's great work began with a friendship. Hiram of Tyre had loved David and now sent servants to honor the new king. Solomon's reply explains why the temple waited. David's life had been full of war, but God had now given rest on every side. Solomon saw this peace as the time to keep God's word to David: Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place shall build the house for my name.

Solomon asked for cedar from Lebanon and skilled Sidonian woodcutters, offering to pay the wages they asked. Hiram blessed the Lord and agreed. His men would bring cedar and cypress down to the sea, float the logs in rafts, and break them up where Solomon chose. Each year Solomon sent large amounts of wheat and pure oil to feed Hiram's household.

The chapter stresses that God kept His promise of wisdom to Solomon, and there was peace between the two kings. Solomon raised workers from all Israel, sending them in shifts to Lebanon. Others carried loads and quarried stone in the hills. Great, costly stones were cut for the foundation, because a house for God deserved the best. In the New Testament, Paul says that believers are built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit (Ephesians 2:22).

  2. What did Hiram's men do with the logs?
