1 Kings 5 · Grade 4
A House for God's Name
Read and Think
Hiram, king of Tyre, sent servants to Solomon because he had always loved David. Solomon explained that David could not build a house for God because of the wars around him. Now God had given Solomon rest on every side, with no enemy and no trouble. God had promised David that his son would build the house.
Solomon asked Hiram to command his men to cut cedars from Lebanon. Solomon would pay their wages. Hiram rejoiced and blessed God for giving David a wise son. He agreed to send cedar and cypress logs by sea in rafts. In return, Solomon gave food to Hiram's household every year.
The writer adds that God gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised, and the two kings made a treaty of peace. Solomon raised a large work force from Israel and sent them to Lebanon in shifts of one month on and two months at home. Stone cutters quarried great, costly stones. Builders from Israel and Gebal prepared the timber and stones to build the house.
