Ahab went home and pouted. He would not eat. Queen Jezebel said she would get the vineyard. She wrote letters with lies about Naboth. Men lied about Naboth, and Naboth died. Then Ahab took the vineyard.

God sent Elijah to Ahab. Elijah said God saw the evil they did. Ahab was sorry. He did not eat and wore rough cloth. God saw that Ahab was humble. God waited to bring the trouble.

A Stolen Vineyard

Name Date

Read the Story

Naboth owned a vineyard in Jezreel, next to Ahab's palace. Ahab offered to buy it or trade for it. Naboth said God forbid that he give away the inheritance of his fathers. God's law said family land should stay in the family.

Ahab went home sullen. He lay on his bed and would not eat. Jezebel mocked him and said she would get the vineyard. She wrote letters in Ahab's name. She told leaders to have two wicked men lie about Naboth. They said Naboth cursed God and the king. Naboth was put to death because of the lies. Then Ahab went to take the vineyard.

God sent Elijah to meet Ahab in the vineyard. Ahab called Elijah his enemy. Elijah said Ahab had sold himself to do evil. Judgment would come on his house and on Jezebel. Ahab tore his clothes and put on sackcloth. He went about quietly. God told Elijah that Ahab had humbled himself. So the trouble would not come in Ahab's days.

Memory Verse

Naboth said to Ahab, “May Yahweh forbid me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you!”

Covetousness and Murder

Name Date

Read and Think

Naboth of Jezreel had a vineyard beside Ahab's palace. Ahab wanted it for a vegetable garden and offered a better vineyard or money. Naboth refused, saying the Lord forbid that he should give the inheritance of his fathers. In Israel, land was a trust from God to each family and was not to be sold away permanently.

Ahab went home sullen and angry and refused to eat. Jezebel asked whether he ruled Israel and promised to give him the vineyard. She wrote letters in Ahab's name, sealed with his seal, ordering a fast and two worthless men to accuse Naboth of cursing God and the king. The elders obeyed. Naboth was stoned, and Ahab went down to take the vineyard.

God sent Elijah to meet Ahab there. Ahab called him his enemy. Elijah announced that Ahab had sold himself to do evil, and judgment would fall on his house and on Jezebel, as on Jeroboam's and Baasha's. No one sold himself to do evil like Ahab, stirred up by Jezebel. Yet when Ahab heard this, he tore his clothes, wore sackcloth, fasted, and went softly. God told Elijah that because Ahab humbled himself, the disaster would not come in his days.

Naboth's Vineyard

Name Date

Read and Think

Naboth's refusal was not stubbornness but faithfulness. Under the Law, the land belonged to Yahweh and was given to each family as an inheritance (Leviticus 25:23). Ahab's wish to turn it into a vegetable garden ignored God's covenant order. The king who should have protected the weak instead pouted on his bed when he could not have what he wanted.

Jezebel's plot shows how sin grows. Coveting led to lies, and lies to murder, all dressed in religious form with a public fast and two false witnesses, which the Law required for a capital case. Naboth was stoned on the testimony of worthless men, and the elders went along with it. The tenth commandment, the ninth, and the sixth were all broken in one scheme.

Elijah met Ahab in the stolen vineyard. Ahab's greeting, have you found me, my enemy, may show a guilty conscience. Elijah announced that Ahab had sold himself to do evil, and the judgment would match Jeroboam's and Baasha's. Remarkably, Ahab humbled himself with sackcloth and fasting, and God delayed the disaster. God's mercy toward even Ahab reveals His heart. In the New Testament, James warns that each one is tempted by his own desire, and desire gives birth to sin (James 1:14-15).

  2. Which commandments were broken in one scheme?
