God of the Hills and Valleys

Read the Story

Ben Hadad of Syria came with thirty-two kings and surrounded Samaria. He sent a message to Ahab. He demanded his silver, gold, wives, and children. Then he wanted even more. The elders told Ahab not to agree.

Ben Hadad bragged that he would crush Samaria. Ahab answered that a man putting on armor should not brag like one taking it off. A prophet told Ahab God would give him the victory. Then Ahab would know God is the Lord. Israel's young men went out, and Syria ran away.

The Syrians said Israel's God was a god of the hills. They would fight in the valley. A man of God told Ahab that God would win there too. Israel won again. Ben Hadad begged for his life. Ahab made a deal and let him go. A prophet told Ahab that God had set Ben Hadad apart for judgment. Ahab went home angry.

Memory Verse

Behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, “Yahweh says, ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand today. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’”

So You Will Know the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Ben Hadad king of Syria gathered his army and thirty-two kings and besieged Samaria. He demanded Ahab's silver, gold, wives, and children, then demanded to search his house and take whatever he liked. The elders advised Ahab to refuse. Ben Hadad threatened that Samaria's dust would not be enough for his soldiers to take a handful each.

Ahab replied that a man putting on armor should not boast like one taking it off. A prophet came to Ahab and said God would deliver the great army into his hand that day, so that Ahab would know that God is the Lord. The young men of the governors led the attack while Ben Hadad was drinking in his tent. Syria fled.

The Syrians said Israel's gods were gods of the hills, so they would fight on the plain. A man of God declared that because of this, God would give the army into Israel's hand, to show He is the Lord. Israel won again. Ben Hadad's servants came wearing sackcloth to beg for his life. Ahab called him brother, made a covenant, and let him go. A prophet disguised himself with a wound and gave Ahab a parable. Then he said that because Ahab released the man God had devoted to destruction, Ahab's life would answer for it.

Grace to an Unfaithful King

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 20 surprises the reader. Ahab, the worst king yet, receives two prophetic promises of victory. Ben Hadad's demands grew from tribute to total humiliation, and his boast was answered by Ahab's proverb: do not let the one putting on armor brag like the one taking it off. God's purpose was stated plainly through the prophet: you will know that I am Yahweh. Grace was offered to Ahab to draw him to repentance.

The second battle was a theological contest. The Syrians decided Israel's God was only a god of the hills and would be powerless in the plain. God answered by giving an even greater victory, to show that He is Lord of all places. Pagan religion imagined local gods with limited territories, but Israel's God is the Creator of heaven and earth.

Yet Ahab squandered the gift. When Ben Hadad's servants came in sackcloth, Ahab called him brother and made a treaty, sparing a man God had devoted to judgment. A prophet then enacted a parable, much like Nathan did with David. He disguised himself as a wounded soldier who let a prisoner escape, and Ahab pronounced judgment on himself without realizing it. Ahab went home sullen and angry. In the New Testament, Paul says that God's kindness is meant to lead us to repentance (Romans 2:4).

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God give Ahab victory, according to the prophet?

  2. What did pagan religion imagine about gods?

  3. Which earlier prophet used a parable in a similar way?

  4. What does Paul say in Romans 2:4 in the New Testament?
