The Gentle Whisper

Name Date

Read the Story

Jezebel sent a message to Elijah. She was going to harm him. Elijah was afraid and ran to the wilderness. He sat under a juniper tree. He told God he had had enough.

He fell asleep. An angel touched him and told him to eat. There was a cake on hot stones and a jar of water. The angel came a second time. The trip would be too hard without food. That food gave him strength for forty days. He went to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Elijah said he was the only one left who served God. God told him to stand on the mountain. A great wind tore the rocks. Then came an earthquake, then a fire. But God was not in them. Then came a still small voice. God said seven thousand in Israel had not bowed to Baal. Elijah found Elisha plowing and threw his coat on him. Elisha followed him.

Elijah at Horeb

Name Date

Read and Think

After Carmel, Jezebel sent word to Elijah that she would take his life. Elijah was afraid and ran for his life to Beersheba, then a day's journey into the wilderness. He sat under a juniper tree and asked God to take his life. He said he was no better than his fathers.

Elijah lay down and slept. An angel touched him and said to arise and eat. He found a cake baked on coals and a jar of water. The angel came again, saying the journey was too great for him. Strengthened by that food, he went forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God, and lodged in a cave.

God asked what he was doing there. Elijah said Israel had forsaken God's covenant and that he alone was left. God passed by. A great wind broke the rocks, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake, and after the earthquake a fire, but God was not in them. After the fire came a still small voice. God gave Elijah new work. He also said seven thousand had not bowed to Baal. Elijah found Elisha plowing with twelve yoke of oxen and cast his mantle on him.

When the Prophet Is Weary

Name Date

Read and Think

Right after the victory on Carmel, Elijah ran from Jezebel's threat. He sat under a juniper tree and prayed that he might die, saying he was no better than his fathers. Scripture is honest about the weakness of God's servants. Even great faith can be followed by deep discouragement and exhaustion.

God's response was tender. He did not rebuke Elijah first. Instead, an angel touched him, fed him, and let him sleep, then fed him again because the journey was too great for him. In the strength of that food Elijah traveled forty days to Horeb, the same mountain where God had met Moses. There God asked him twice what he was doing there, inviting him to speak his heart.

God passed by with wind, earthquake, and fire, the signs that accompanied Sinai, but Yahweh was not in them. He came in a still small voice. God corrected Elijah's view that he was alone: seven thousand had not bowed to Baal. God also gave him new work, including anointing Elisha as his successor. Elisha left his oxen and followed, a picture of costly discipleship. In the New Testament, Paul points to these seven thousand and says that at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace (Romans 11:4-5).
