There had been no rain for three years. Elijah met King Ahab. He told Ahab to bring the prophets of Baal to Mount Carmel.

Each side made an offering. The prophets of Baal called to Baal all day. No one answered. Then Elijah fixed God's altar. He had them pour water on it three times. Elijah prayed. Fire came down from God! It burned up everything, even the water.

The people fell on their faces. They said the Lord is God! Elijah prayed for rain. A small cloud came up. Then the sky grew dark, and a big rain came.

Who Is the True God?

Name Date

Read the Story

In the third year, God told Elijah to go to Ahab. On the way, Elijah met Obadiah, a man who feared God. Obadiah had hidden a hundred of God's prophets in caves. Elijah told Ahab to gather Israel and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.

Elijah asked the people how long they would waver. If the Lord is God, follow Him. The prophets of Baal called on Baal from morning until noon. Elijah teased them. Maybe Baal was asleep! But no one answered. Then Elijah built an altar with twelve stones. He had water poured on it three times.

Elijah prayed that the people would know the Lord is God. Fire fell and burned up the offering, the wood, the stones, and the water. The people fell down and said the Lord is God! Then Elijah prayed, and his servant looked seven times. His servant saw a small cloud. Soon there was a great rain.

When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, “Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!”

Fire from Heaven

Name Date

Read and Think

In the third year of drought, God sent Elijah to Ahab. Obadiah ran Ahab's house. He feared the Lord and had hidden a hundred prophets from Jezebel. Ahab called Elijah the troubler of Israel. Elijah answered that Ahab was the troubler, because he had forsaken God's commandments and followed the Baals.

On Mount Carmel, Elijah asked the people how long they would waver between two opinions. Four hundred fifty prophets of Baal called on Baal all day. There was no voice and no answer. Elijah repaired the Lord's broken altar with twelve stones, one for each tribe. He dug a trench. He had the offering soaked with water three times.

At the evening offering, Elijah prayed. He asked that the people would know the Lord is God. He asked God to turn their hearts back. The fire of the Lord fell. It burned the offering, wood, stones, dust, and water. The people fell on their faces and cried that the Lord is God. The false prophets were judged according to the Law. Elijah prayed on the mountaintop, and after his servant looked seven times, a small cloud rose and a great rain came.

The Lord, He Is God

Name Date

Read and Think

After three years, God sent Elijah to show himself to Ahab. Obadiah, a God-fearing official, had protected a hundred prophets from Jezebel's persecution. When Ahab accused Elijah of troubling Israel, Elijah turned the charge around: Ahab had troubled Israel by forsaking the commandments and following the Baals.

On Carmel, Elijah confronted the people's divided loyalty. How long would they limp between two opinions? The contest was simple: the God who answers by fire, He is God. Baal's four hundred fifty prophets cried, danced, and cut themselves, but there was no voice. Elijah mocked their god as perhaps busy, traveling, or asleep. Then he rebuilt the Lord's altar with twelve stones, recalling God's covenant with all twelve tribes, and drenched it with water.

Elijah's prayer was short and focused on God's glory: that the people would know Yahweh is God and that He had turned their hearts back. Fire fell and consumed everything, even the water. The people confessed, Yahweh, He is God. The false prophets were judged according to the Law. Elijah prayed, and his servant looked seven times, until a cloud like a man's hand rose from the sea. In the New Testament, James says Elijah was a man like us who prayed earnestly, and the sky gave rain (James 5:17-18).
