Flour and Oil

Name Date

Read the Story

Elijah came from Gilead. He told Ahab there would be no dew or rain except by his word. God sent Elijah to the brook Cherith. Ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening.

When the brook dried up, God sent him to Zarephath. A widow there was gathering sticks. She had only a handful of flour and a little oil. She planned to make a last meal for herself and her son. Elijah told her not to fear. God promised that the flour and oil would last until the rain came. She obeyed, and they did not run out.

Later her son became sick and died. Elijah carried him upstairs. He stretched himself on the boy three times and cried to God. God heard Elijah. The boy's life came back! The woman said now she knew Elijah's word from God was true.

Fed by Ravens and a Widow

Name Date

Read and Think

Elijah the Tishbite told Ahab that as the Lord lives, there would be no dew or rain these years except by his word. This was a direct challenge to Baal, who was worshiped as the god of storms. God sent Elijah to hide by the brook Cherith, where ravens brought him bread and meat morning and evening.

When the brook dried up, God sent Elijah to Zarephath in Sidon, Jezebel's home country. A widow had only a handful of meal and a little oil and was preparing a last meal. Elijah told her not to be afraid but to make him a small cake first. God's word promised the jar of meal would not run out, nor the oil fail, until rain came. She did as Elijah said, and they ate for many days.

Later her son became sick until there was no breath left in him. She asked if Elijah had come to bring her sin to remembrance. Elijah carried the boy to the upper room, stretched himself on him three times, and cried to the Lord to let his life return. The Lord listened, and the child revived. The woman said that now she knew Elijah was a man of God and that God's word in his mouth was truth.

The God Who Gives Life

Name Date

Read and Think

Elijah's name means my God is Yahweh, and his first words announce a contest. Baal was hailed as the lord of rain and fertility, yet Elijah declared that no dew or rain would fall except by his word from the living God. The drought exposed Baal as powerless. Meanwhile God hid Elijah at the brook Cherith, sustaining him through ravens, which were unclean birds under the Law.

God then sent His prophet into the heart of Baal's territory, to a widow of Zarephath near Sidon. She had nothing left but a handful of meal and a little oil. Elijah asked her to feed him first, giving her God's promise that the meal and oil would not fail until the rain. Her obedience was an act of faith, and the promise held day after day.

When her son died, she feared God was punishing her for sin. Elijah carried the boy upstairs, stretched himself on him three times, and cried out. Yahweh heard, and the child's life returned. This is the first resurrection recorded in Scripture. It proved that life belongs to Yahweh, not Baal. In the New Testament, Jesus pointed to this widow, saying Elijah was sent to none of Israel's widows but to a widow of Zarephath (Luke 4:25-26).
