Kings Who Did Wrong

Name Date

Read the Story

God sent a prophet named Jehu to King Baasha. Jehu said Baasha did evil like Jeroboam. So his house would end too.

Then many kings came, one after another. A king named Omri bought a hill. He built a city called Samaria on it. Omri did evil too.

Omri's son Ahab became king. Ahab did more evil than the kings before him. He married Jezebel. They prayed to a false god. It was Baal.

Memory Verse

From Bad to Worse

Name Date

Read the Story

God sent the prophet Jehu son of Hanani to Baasha. God had lifted Baasha up from the dust. But Baasha walked in Jeroboam's sins. So his house would end like Jeroboam's.

Baasha's son Elah reigned only two years. His servant Zimri took the throne. Zimri ruled seven days. Then the army made Omri king. Omri bought the hill of Samaria and built a city there. He did more evil than all before him.

Then Ahab son of Omri reigned twenty-two years. He did more evil than all before him. He married Jezebel, a king's daughter from Sidon. He served Baal and built an altar for Baal in Samaria. In his days, a man rebuilt Jericho. It cost him his sons, as Joshua had said.

Ahab and Jezebel

Name Date

Read and Think

The word of the Lord came to Jehu son of Hanani against Baasha. God had lifted him from the dust and made him prince over Israel, yet he walked in Jeroboam's way. His house would be swept away. When Baasha died, his son Elah reigned two years until Zimri, a chariot commander, rose against him and took the throne.

Zimri reigned only seven days. The army made Omri king, and Zimri died when the palace burned. Israel was divided between Omri and Tibni, but Omri won. Omri bought the hill of Samaria for two talents of silver and built the city that became Israel's capital. Omri did evil, worse than all before him.

Ahab son of Omri reigned twenty-two years in Samaria and did more evil than all before him. As if Jeroboam's sins were a small thing, he married Jezebel daughter of the king of Sidon and served and worshiped Baal. He built a temple and altar for Baal in Samaria and made an Asherah. In his days Hiel rebuilt Jericho and lost his oldest and youngest sons, according to the word Joshua spoke.

  1. How did Zimri come to the throne?

  2. How much did Omri pay for the hill of Samaria?

  3. Who was Jezebel's father?

  4. What happened when Hiel rebuilt Jericho?

A Downward Spiral

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 16 reads like a fast-moving list of failures. God's word through Jehu reminded Baasha that God had raised him from the dust, but he squandered that grace. His son Elah was struck down while drinking in a steward's house, and Zimri seized power. Zimri ruled seven days before the army proclaimed Omri king, and he died in the burning palace.

Omri was politically strong. He built Samaria, which remained Israel's capital until its fall. Assyrian records even called Israel the house of Omri. Yet the narrator gives him only a few verses, because Scripture measures kings by faithfulness to God, not by worldly success. Omri did more evil than all who were before him.

Ahab surpassed him. As if walking in Jeroboam's sins were a trivial thing, he married Jezebel of Sidon and made Baal worship official in Israel, building a temple for Baal in Samaria. The chapter ends with Hiel rebuilding Jericho at the cost of his firstborn and youngest sons, fulfilling Joshua 6:26. The darkness sets the stage for God to send a prophet. In the New Testament, Jesus asks what it profits a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life (Mark 8:36).

Show What You Know

  1. What did Assyrian records call Israel?

  2. Why does the narrator give Omri only a few verses?

  3. What verse was fulfilled when Jericho was rebuilt?

  4. What does Jesus ask in Mark 8:36 in the New Testament?
