Asa's True Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Abijam reigned in Judah for three years. He walked in his father's sins. But for David's sake, God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem. That means God kept a son of David on the throne.

Asa reigned forty-one years. He did what was right, like David. He removed the idols his fathers had made. He even removed his grandmother Maacah from being queen mother. She had made an idol, so Asa cut it down and burned it. The high places were not all taken away. But Asa's heart was true to God all his days.

Baasha king of Israel made war on Judah. Asa sent silver and gold to the king of Syria for help. In Israel, Jeroboam's son Nadab did evil. Baasha took the throne from him. Jeroboam's house came to an end, as Ahijah had said. Baasha also did evil.

A Lamp for David

Name Date

Read and Think

Abijam became king of Judah. He walked in all the sins of his father, and his heart was not perfect with God like David's. Yet for David's sake, God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him. David had done right in God's eyes, except in the matter of Uriah.

Asa reigned forty-one years in Jerusalem and did right, as David did. He put away the idols his fathers had made. He removed his grandmother Maacah from being queen mother because she made an image for Asherah. Asa cut down her image and burned it by the brook Kidron. The high places were not removed, but Asa's heart was perfect with God all his days.

Baasha of Israel built Ramah to block travel to Judah. Asa took silver and gold from the temple and sent them to Ben Hadad of Syria, who attacked Israel. Then Asa's men carried away Ramah's stones and used them to build. Meanwhile in Israel, Nadab son of Jeroboam did evil. Baasha rose against him and took the throne. He wiped out Jeroboam's house, just as God had said by Ahijah. Yet Baasha walked in the same sins.

A Faithful King in a Faithless Age

Name Date

Read and Think

Abijam's short reign showed the drift of Judah, yet God kept a lamp burning in Jerusalem for David's sake. The phrase points to God's covenant with David (2 Samuel 7). The narrator honestly notes David's one great failure, the matter of Uriah, while still holding him up as the model of a heart wholly devoted to God.

Asa brought reform. He removed idols, put away shrine practices, and removed his grandmother Maacah from her honored position because she had made an Asherah image. He cut it down and burned it at the Kidron. This shows that loyalty to God came before family rank. The high places remained, but Asa's heart was perfect with Yahweh all his days.

Asa's response to Baasha's pressure was less admirable. He took temple treasure and bought an alliance with Ben Hadad of Syria. Second Chronicles 16 records that a prophet rebuked him for relying on Syria rather than on God. In Israel, Baasha took the throne from Nadab and struck down Jeroboam's whole house, fulfilling Ahijah's word. Yet Baasha repeated Jeroboam's sin. Judgment that falls on others does not make us righteous. In the New Testament, Paul says that the one who judges others but does the same things condemns himself (Romans 2:1).

Show What You Know

  1. What covenant does the lamp point to?

  2. What did Asa's action against Maacah show?

  3. What did a prophet rebuke Asa for in 2 Chronicles 16?

  4. What does Paul say in Romans 2:1 in the New Testament?

  2. Baasha judged Jeroboam's house but did the same sin. How can you guard against seeing sin in others but not in yourself?
