You Cannot Hide from God

Name Date

Read the Story

Jeroboam's son Abijah became sick. Jeroboam told his wife to disguise herself. She went to Ahijah, the prophet who had said Jeroboam would be king. She brought bread, cakes, and honey.

Ahijah was old and blind. But God told him who was coming. When he heard her steps, he called her Jeroboam's wife. He said Jeroboam had done more evil than all before him. He had made idols and turned his back on God. Judgment would come on his house. The child would die. But he was the only one in whom God found something good.

The child died, and all Israel mourned him. In Judah, Rehoboam's people did evil too. They built idols on every high hill. Shishak king of Egypt came. He took the treasures from God's house and all the gold shields. Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place.

Gold Turned to Bronze

Name Date

Read and Think

When Jeroboam's son Abijah became sick, Jeroboam sent his wife in disguise to Ahijah at Shiloh. Ahijah was the prophet who had told Jeroboam he would be king. She took ten loaves, cakes, and a jar of honey to ask what would happen to the child.

Ahijah was blind with age, but the Lord told him she was coming. As she entered, he called her Jeroboam's wife and said he had heavy news. God had torn the kingdom from David's house and given it to Jeroboam. But Jeroboam had not been like David. He had made other gods and cast God behind his back. Judgment would sweep away his house. The child would die, and all Israel would mourn him, for in him there was found some good thing toward the Lord.

In Judah, Rehoboam reigned seventeen years, and Judah did evil. They built high places, pillars, and idols on every high hill. In the fifth year of Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. He took away the treasures of the Lord's house and all of Solomon's gold shields. Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them.

“All Israel will mourn for him and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam will come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward Yahweh, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.”

The Cost of Turning Away

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeroboam's son Abijah fell ill. Jeroboam sent his wife in disguise to Ahijah, the same prophet who had torn the coat and promised him the kingdom. The disguise shows Jeroboam's double heart: he wanted the prophet's help but not the prophet's God. Ahijah was blind with age, yet God told him who was coming and what to say.

Ahijah's message was severe. God had exalted Jeroboam, torn the kingdom from David's house, and given it to him. But Jeroboam had done more evil than all before him. He had made other gods and molten images and had cast God behind his back. Judgment would fall on his entire house. The sick child would die when his mother's feet entered the city. Yet the boy would be buried with honor and mourned by all Israel, because in him was found some good thing toward Yahweh.

The chapter then turns to Judah. Under Rehoboam, Judah also provoked God with high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill. In Rehoboam's fifth year, Shishak of Egypt plundered Jerusalem and carried off the temple treasures and Solomon's gold shields. Rehoboam replaced them with bronze, a fitting picture of the kingdom's decline from glory. In the New Testament, Hebrews says that nothing is hidden from God's sight (Hebrews 4:13).
