Keep God's Word

Name Date

Read the Story

God sent a man of God from Judah to Bethel. Jeroboam was at the altar to burn incense. The man cried out against the altar. He said a king named Josiah would one day come from David's family. As a sign, the altar would split. The ashes would pour out.

Jeroboam stretched out his hand and told his men to seize him. His hand dried up. The altar split, just as God said. The king begged the man to pray. The man prayed, and the hand was healed. The king asked him to come home and eat. But God had said not to eat or drink there. So he went home another way.

An old prophet in Bethel went after him. He lied and said an angel told him to bring the man back. The man went with him and ate. Then God's word came. Because the man disobeyed, he would not be buried with his fathers. On the way home, a lion met him on the road. Jeroboam still did not turn from his evil way.

Memory Verse

“The king answered the man of God, “Now intercede for the favor of Yahweh your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” The man of God interceded with Yahweh, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and became as it was before.”

A Lesson in Obedience

Name Date

Read and Think

By the word of the Lord, a man of God came from Judah to Bethel while Jeroboam stood at the altar. He cried against the altar that a son of David named Josiah would one day burn the bones of these false priests on it. As a sign, the altar would be torn apart and its ashes poured out.

Jeroboam stretched out his hand to have him seized, and the hand dried up so that he could not pull it back. The altar split and the ashes poured out. The king asked the man to pray for him, and the man of God prayed. The king's hand was restored. The man refused the king's invitation to eat, because God had commanded him not to eat bread, drink water, or return the same way.

An old prophet in Bethel followed him and lied, saying an angel had told him to bring the man home. The man went back and ate. Then the word of the Lord came through the old prophet: because he had disobeyed, his body would not come to the tomb of his fathers. On the road a lion met him and killed him, but the lion did not eat him or harm the donkey. After this, Jeroboam still did not turn from his evil way.

When God Has Spoken

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 13 is a sober story about the authority of God's word. A man of God came from Judah and cried against Jeroboam's altar at Bethel. He named Josiah, a king who would not appear for about three hundred years (2 Kings 23:15-16). The sign came at once: the altar split, and the king's outstretched hand withered. Yet the man of God interceded, and God restored the hand.

The man had clear instructions: no bread, no water, and no return by the same road. He resisted the king's offer of a reward. But an old prophet from Bethel claimed an angel had spoken to him, and the narrator states plainly that he lied. The man of God went back and ate. Then, strikingly, the true word of the Lord came through the very prophet who had deceived him. Because he had disobeyed, he would not be buried with his fathers.

A lion met him on the road and killed him, yet the lion stood beside the body and did not harm the donkey. This detail showed that it was God's judgment and not chance. The old prophet buried him and mourned, and he asked to be buried beside him, confirming that his words would come true. After this, Jeroboam still did not turn from his evil way, and it became sin to his house. In the New Testament, Paul says that even if an angel from heaven preaches a different gospel, it should not be believed (Galatians 1:8).

  2. What does the narrator say plainly about the old prophet?

  3. What showed that the lion was God's judgment?

  4. What does Paul say in the New Testament about an angel with a different gospel?
