Rehoboam was the new king. The people came to him. They asked him to make their hard work lighter. He told them to come back in three days.

The old men told him to speak kindly. Then the people would serve him. But the young men told him to be harsh. Rehoboam listened to the young men. He gave a hard answer.

Ten tribes would not follow him. They made Jeroboam their king. God told Rehoboam not to fight. Jeroboam made two gold calves. He told the people to worship them. That was a sin.

Harsh Words, Divided Kingdom

Name Date

Read and Think

All Israel came to Shechem to make Rehoboam king. Jeroboam had returned from Egypt, and he and the people spoke to the king. They said Solomon had made their yoke heavy. If Rehoboam would make it lighter, they would serve him.

The old men who had served Solomon advised the king to be a servant to the people and speak good words to them. Then they would be his servants forever. But Rehoboam rejected their advice. He asked the young men he grew up with, and they told him to promise an even heavier yoke. Rehoboam answered the people roughly. This turn of events was from the Lord, to fulfill His word through Ahijah.

Israel rebelled, and the people turned against Adoram, who was over the forced labor. Rehoboam fled to Jerusalem. Israel made Jeroboam king, and only Judah stayed with David's house. When Rehoboam gathered an army, God sent Shemaiah to say not to fight their brothers, and they listened. Jeroboam feared the people would return to Rehoboam if they worshiped in Jerusalem. He made two golden calves, set them in Bethel and Dan, and appointed priests who were not Levites.

The Servant King and the Golden Calves

Name Date

Read and Think

The united kingdom ended in a single conversation. At Shechem, Israel asked Rehoboam to lighten the heavy yoke Solomon had laid on them. The elders gave counsel that sounds like the gospel: if you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them, and answer them with good words, then they will be your servants forever. Rehoboam rejected it and took the advice of the young men, promising scorpions instead of whips.

The narrator adds an important note. The turn of events was from Yahweh, that He might establish His word spoken by Ahijah. Human pride and divine purpose worked together. Israel cried out that they had no portion in David and went home. The people turned against Adoram, the officer over forced labor, and Rehoboam fled. Only Judah, with Benjamin, remained loyal. When Rehoboam gathered an army, God spoke through Shemaiah, and the soldiers obeyed and went home.

Jeroboam had received a promise from God, but he did not trust it. He feared that worship in Jerusalem would win the people back. So he made two calves of gold and said, in effect, that these were the gods who brought Israel out of Egypt, echoing Aaron's calf at Sinai. He set them in Bethel and Dan, made priests from all the people, and invented a feast. This became the sin of Jeroboam, a phrase repeated throughout Kings. In the New Testament, Jesus said that whoever wants to be great must be a servant (Mark 10:43).
