1 Kings 12 · Grade 3
Two Kingdoms
Read the Story
Rehoboam went to Shechem to be made king. Jeroboam and the people came to him. They said Solomon had made their load heavy. They asked him to make it lighter. Then they would serve him.
The old men gave wise advice. They said to serve the people and speak good words. Then the people would serve him forever. But Rehoboam asked the young men too. They told him to be even harsher. After three days, he gave the people a rough answer.
Israel's ten tribes left. They made Jeroboam king. Only Judah followed Rehoboam. He gathered an army, but God said not to fight their brothers. They obeyed and went home. Jeroboam was afraid the people would go back to Jerusalem to worship. So he made two calves of gold. He put one in Bethel and one in Dan.
Memory Verse
“They replied, “If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them, and answer them with good words, then they will be your servants forever.””
