Not Even Half Was Told

Name Date

Read the Story

The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame and of the name of the Lord. She came to Jerusalem to test him with hard questions. She came with a very large group, with camels carrying spices, much gold, and precious stones.

Solomon answered all her questions. Nothing was hidden from him. She saw his house, the food on his table, his servants, and his burnt offerings at God's house. She said she had not believed the reports until she came. Not even half was told her!

She blessed the Lord, who had put Solomon on the throne because He loved Israel. She gave Solomon gold and spices, and Solomon gave her all she wanted. Solomon made a great throne of ivory and gold, with lions on each side. He became greater than all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.

Wisdom That Points to God

Name Date

Read and Think

The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame concerning the name of the Lord. She traveled a long way to Jerusalem with a great caravan of camels carrying spices, gold, and precious stones. She came to test him with hard questions and spoke with him about all that was in her heart.

Solomon answered every question. When the queen saw his wisdom, his house, his servants, and his offerings at the house of the Lord, there was no more spirit in her. She said that the report she heard was true, but not even half was told her. She blessed the Lord, who delighted in Solomon and made him king to do justice and righteousness.

She gave the king a great amount of gold, spices, and precious stones. Hiram's ships also brought gold, almug wood, and precious stones from Ophir. Solomon made shields of gold and a great ivory throne with six steps and twelve lions. Silver was as common as stones in Jerusalem. All the earth sought Solomon's presence to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.

Greater Than Solomon

Name Date

Read and Think

The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame concerning Yahweh's name. That detail matters: his reputation was tied to the Lord. She came from far away with a royal caravan to test him with riddles and hard questions. She spoke with him about all that was in her heart, and nothing was hidden from the king that he could not answer.

The queen was overwhelmed by what she saw. His wisdom, his house, his officials, and his offerings at the house of the Lord left her breathless. She confessed that she had not believed the reports, but not even half was told her. She blessed Yahweh, who had delighted in Solomon and set him on the throne because He loved Israel forever. The king was meant to do justice and righteousness.

The rest of the chapter describes Solomon's great wealth: six hundred sixty-six talents of gold a year, gold shields, an ivory throne, and silver as common as stones. Yet careful readers remember Deuteronomy 17, which warned kings not to gather much gold or many horses from Egypt. The glory of this chapter may hide the start of trouble. In the New Testament, Jesus said that the queen of the south came to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and someone greater than Solomon is here (Matthew 12:42).

  1. What was Solomon's reputation tied to?

  2. What did the queen confess?

  3. What did Deuteronomy 17 warn kings about?

  4. What did Jesus say in the New Testament about Solomon?
