David Keeps His Promise

Name Date

Read the Story

King David was old and stayed in bed. His son Adonijah decided to make himself king. He had a big feast, but he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Zadok the priest, or his brother Solomon.

Nathan told Bathsheba to go to the king. She reminded David that he had promised that Solomon would be king. While she was talking, Nathan came in and said the same thing. David promised again that Solomon would sit on his throne that very day.

David told them to put Solomon on his own mule and take him down to Gihon. There Zadok anointed Solomon with oil. They blew the trumpet, and the people played pipes and rejoiced. When Adonijah heard, he was afraid. Solomon let him go home in peace.

God's Chosen King

Name Date

Read and Think

First Kings begins at the end of King David's life. David was old and weak, and his son Adonijah saw a chance to take the throne. Joab the army captain and Abiathar the priest followed him. Adonijah offered sacrifices and held a feast, calling himself king.

But God had chosen Solomon, and David had made a promise to Bathsheba. Nathan the prophet made a wise plan. Bathsheba went in to the king, and then Nathan came in to support her words. David acted at once. He swore that Solomon would reign after him and sit on his throne.

Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah brought Solomon down to Gihon on David's mule. Zadok took the horn of oil from the Tent and anointed him. The people shouted so loudly that the earth shook. Adonijah's guests ran away in fear. Adonijah held onto the horns of the altar, but Solomon said that if he proved worthy, not a hair of his would fall to the earth.

The Throne of David

Name Date

Read and Think

First Kings opens with Israel at a turning point. King David was old, and the question of who would rule next was not yet settled in public. Adonijah, David's oldest living son, exalted himself and said he would be king. He gathered chariots and runners, and won over Joab and Abiathar the priest. Others, like Zadok, Benaiah, and Nathan, stayed loyal to David.

Nathan knew that God had chosen Solomon. He urged Bathsheba to remind David of his oath, and then he confirmed her words. David answered with a solemn promise: as God lives, Solomon would reign after him. He gave clear orders. Solomon would ride the king's own mule, be anointed at Gihon, and sit on the throne as ruler over Israel and Judah.

The anointing was public and joyful. Zadok poured the oil, the trumpet sounded, and the people said, Long live King Solomon! When the news reached Adonijah's feast, his guests scattered. Adonijah ran to the altar and held its horns for safety. Solomon showed mercy and sent him home. David blessed God, who had let him see his son on the throne. In the New Testament, Jesus is called the Son of David, the King whose kingdom will never end (Luke 1:32-33).
