Think of Your Friend

Name Date

Read the Story

In Corinth, people gave food to pretend gods. Then the food was sold. Some Christians wanted to know if they could eat it.

Paul said there is only one God. A pretend god is nothing. Some Christians knew this. But some still felt bad about eating the food.

Paul said love builds up. He said to care about how a friend feels. Do not do something that makes a friend fall into wrong. Love is better than being right.

Memory Verse

“Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.”

Knowledge and Love

Name Date

Read the Story

In Corinth, food was often offered to idols at temples and then sold in the market. The Corinthians asked Paul if Christians could eat it.

Paul said that an idol is nothing. There is one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ. Some believers knew this well. But others were new in their faith, and eating that food troubled their conscience.

Paul said knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. A believer should not use his freedom in a way that hurts a weaker brother. Paul said that if food made his brother stumble, he would not eat meat.

1 Corinthians 8 · Grade 4

For the Sake of a Brother

Name Date

Read and Think

Much of the meat in Corinth's markets had first been offered at pagan temples. The Corinthians asked whether believers could eat it. Some proud members said they had knowledge: idols are not real, so the food did not matter.

Paul agrees that an idol is nothing and that there is one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ. But he warns that knowledge alone can make people proud. Love builds up. The person who loves God is known by Him.

Not everyone had this knowledge. For some newer believers, eating that food felt like worshiping the idol again, and it wounded their conscience. Paul says that hurting such a brother, for whom Christ died, is sinning against Christ. He is willing to give up meat forever rather than cause his brother to stumble.

1 Corinthians 8 · Grade 5

Knowledge Puffs Up

Name Date

Read and Think

The question of food sacrificed to idols touched daily life in Corinth. Meat sold in the market and served at social meals often came from pagan sacrifices. Some Corinthians, confident in their theology, claimed that since an idol is nothing, they were free to eat anything, even at temple banquets.

Paul grants their premise. There is no God but one: one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things. Yet he challenges their attitude. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. Real knowledge is not mastery of ideas but being known by God and loving Him.

The decisive issue is the weaker brother. Some believers, used to idol worship, could not eat such food without feeling they were worshiping again. If they saw a stronger believer eating in a temple, they might be emboldened to act against their conscience and be spiritually harmed. To wound the conscience of a brother for whom Christ died is to sin against Christ. Paul concludes that he would rather never eat meat than cause his brother to stumble.

Show What You Know

  1. What claim did some confident Corinthians make?

  2. How does Paul describe real knowledge?

  3. Why could the strong believer's example harm a weaker brother?

  4. How does Paul describe wounding a weaker brother's conscience?
