Serving God Where You Are

Name Date

Read the Story

The believers in Corinth wrote to Paul with questions about marriage. Paul answered them with care. He taught that a husband and wife should be kind and care for each other.

Paul said married believers should keep their promise and not leave each other. He also said that being single can be good. A single person can give more time to the things of the Lord.

Paul said that each man has his own gift from God. Some people are married and some are single. Both can please God. Paul said what matters is keeping God's commandments.

1 Corinthians 7 · Grade 4

Married or Single, Serving the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

The Corinthians had written Paul a letter with questions about marriage. Some had asked whether married people should live apart to be more holy. Paul says no. He teaches that husband and wife belong to each other and should care for each other with affection.

Paul says marriage is a lifelong commitment. Married believers should not separate. If a believer is married to someone who does not yet believe, the believer should stay if the spouse is willing, because the believer's faith may bless the whole home.

Paul also praises singleness. He was single himself, and he calls it a gift from God. An unmarried person can be concerned with the things of the Lord without distraction. Paul's main point is that each believer should serve God in the situation where God called him. What matters is keeping God's commandments.

“Only, as the Lord has distributed to each man, as God has called each, so let him walk. So I command in all the assemblies.”

1 Corinthians 7 · Grade 5

Each One His Own Gift

Name Date

Read and Think

In chapter 7 Paul begins answering questions the Corinthians had sent him. Some had asked whether marriage itself was unspiritual. Paul affirms marriage as good and mutual. Husband and wife belong to one another and should care for each other with affection.

He then speaks to marriage as a lifelong covenant. Passing on the Lord's own teaching, he says that a wife should not leave her husband and a husband should not leave his wife. Where a believer is married to an unbeliever, the believer should stay if the unbelieving spouse is willing. The believing spouse brings a holy influence into the home, and the children are blessed by it.

Paul also honors singleness. He wishes others could share his own freedom, yet he recognizes that each one has his own gift from God, one of one kind and another of another. In a time of distress, an unmarried person can give undivided devotion to the Lord. Throughout the chapter Paul repeats one principle: let each believer remain in the calling in which God called him, because what matters is keeping God's commandments.

  2. What did Paul pass on from the Lord's own teaching?
