1 Corinthians 7 · Grade 4

Married or Single, Serving the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

The Corinthians had written Paul a letter with questions about marriage. Some had asked whether married people should live apart to be more holy. Paul says no. He teaches that husband and wife belong to each other and should care for each other with affection.

Paul says marriage is a lifelong commitment. Married believers should not separate. If a believer is married to someone who does not yet believe, the believer should stay if the spouse is willing, because the believer's faith may bless the whole home.

Paul also praises singleness. He was single himself, and he calls it a gift from God. An unmarried person can be concerned with the things of the Lord without distraction. Paul's main point is that each believer should serve God in the situation where God called him. What matters is keeping God's commandments.

Memory Verse

“Only, as the Lord has distributed to each man, as God has called each, so let him walk. So I command in all the assemblies.”
