Washed and Made New

Name Date

Read the Story

Some believers in Corinth had disagreements. Instead of working them out, they took each other to court before judges who did not know God. Paul asked, Isn't there even one wise man among you who would be able to decide between his brothers?

Paul reminded them that some of them used to live in wrong ways. Paul said, You were washed. You were sanctified. That means Jesus made them clean and set them apart for God.

Paul taught that the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. God will raise His people's bodies, just as He raised Jesus. Since Jesus bought them with a price, they should honor God with their bodies.

Memory Verse

“Some of you were such, but you were washed. You were sanctified. You were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God.”

1 Corinthians 6 · Grade 4

Glorify God in Your Body

Name Date

Read and Think

Believers in Corinth were suing one another before unbelieving judges. Paul is ashamed for them. He asks if there is not one wise person in the church able to settle the matter. He even says it would be better to be wronged than to harm a brother.

Paul reminds them that people who keep living in unrighteousness will not inherit God's Kingdom. But the good news follows. Some of them had lived that way, but they were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Some in Corinth thought the body did not matter to God. Paul disagrees. The body is for the Lord, and God will raise it by His power. The body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Because believers were bought with a price, they should keep their bodies pure and glorify God in them.

1 Corinthians 6 · Grade 5

You Are Not Your Own

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul turns to lawsuits among believers. Rather than resolving disputes within the fellowship, Corinthian Christians were bringing one another before pagan courts. Paul reasons that saints will one day judge the world and even angels, so surely they can settle ordinary matters. Lawsuits between brothers are already a defeat. Paul asks why they would not rather accept wrong or loss than harm a fellow believer.

He then warns that the unrighteous will not inherit God's Kingdom, listing patterns of life that mark those outside it. Yet his tone shifts to grace: some of them were such, but they were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of God. Their past does not define them; Christ's work does.

Finally, Paul confronts sayings some Corinthians used, as if the body were unimportant. He insists that the body is for the Lord and the Lord for the body. God raised Jesus and will raise believers too. Their bodies are members of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. Since they were bought with a price, they belong to God and should flee immorality and glorify God in their bodies.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Paul say believers should be able to settle ordinary disputes?

  2. What changes the identity of believers with a sinful past?

  3. What wrong idea about the body does Paul correct?

  4. Why do believers belong to God?
