1 Corinthians 6 · Grade 5
You Are Not Your Own
Read and Think
Paul turns to lawsuits among believers. Rather than resolving disputes within the fellowship, Corinthian Christians were bringing one another before pagan courts. Paul reasons that saints will one day judge the world and even angels, so surely they can settle ordinary matters. Lawsuits between brothers are already a defeat. Paul asks why they would not rather accept wrong or loss than harm a fellow believer.
He then warns that the unrighteous will not inherit God's Kingdom, listing patterns of life that mark those outside it. Yet his tone shifts to grace: some of them were such, but they were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of God. Their past does not define them; Christ's work does.
Finally, Paul confronts sayings some Corinthians used, as if the body were unimportant. He insists that the body is for the Lord and the Lord for the body. God raised Jesus and will raise believers too. Their bodies are members of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. Since they were bought with a price, they belong to God and should flee immorality and glorify God in their bodies.

Think About It
Paul says a believer's past does not define him, because Christ washes and sanctifies. How should that truth shape the way you see yourself and others?
If your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, how might that change your choices about what you watch, say, and do?
Memory Verse
“Some of you were such, but you were washed. You were sanctified. You were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God.”
