The Deep Things of God

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul said that when he came to Corinth, he did not come with fancy speech. He decided to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. He was with them in weakness and fear.

Paul's preaching was not in clever words. It showed the Spirit and God's power. That way their faith would stand in the power of God, not in the wisdom of men.

God has prepared wonderful things for those who love Him. No eye has seen them. But God showed them through His Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. The Spirit helps believers know what God has given them.

Memory Verse

“But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

1 Corinthians 2 · Grade 4

Faith That Rests on God

Name Date

Read and Think

Corinth loved polished speakers, and traveling teachers often won crowds with impressive speeches. Paul chose a different way. He did not come with excellence of speech. He decided to focus on Jesus Christ and Him crucified. He even admits he came in weakness, fear, and trembling.

Paul says his plain preaching came with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power. He wanted their faith to rest on God's power, not on human wisdom. Faith built on a speaker's skill can fall apart, but faith built on God stands firm.

Paul says he does speak wisdom, but it is God's hidden wisdom, planned before the world began. The rulers of this age did not understand it, or they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. God revealed this wisdom through His Spirit. Just as only a person's own spirit knows his thoughts, only God's Spirit knows the things of God.

1 Corinthians 2 · Grade 5

The Mind of Christ

Name Date

Read and Think

In a culture that admired rhetoric, Paul deliberately set aside persuasive techniques when he preached in Corinth. He resolved to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and him crucified. His weakness, fear, and trembling were not a lack of conviction but an honest awareness that the results depended on God. The message, not the messenger, carried the power.

Paul then explains that the gospel is true wisdom, but of a different kind. It is God's wisdom in a mystery, once hidden and now revealed, foreordained before the ages for the glory of believers. The rulers of this world missed it entirely; had they understood, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. Paul echoes Isaiah: what no eye has seen and no ear has heard, God has prepared for those who love him.

The key to this wisdom is the Holy Spirit. Just as only a person's spirit knows that person's thoughts, only God's Spirit knows the things of God. Believers have received the Spirit who is from God so they can understand what he has freely given. The natural person, without the Spirit, regards these truths as foolishness because they are spiritually discerned. Paul concludes that believers have the mind of Christ.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was Paul's weakness not a lack of conviction?

  2. What does Paul mean by God's wisdom in a mystery?

  3. Why does the natural person regard God's truths as foolishness?

  4. What does Paul say believers have at the end of the chapter?
