1 Corinthians 2 · Grade 5
The Mind of Christ
Read and Think
In a culture that admired rhetoric, Paul deliberately set aside persuasive techniques when he preached in Corinth. He resolved to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and him crucified. His weakness, fear, and trembling were not a lack of conviction but an honest awareness that the results depended on God. The message, not the messenger, carried the power.
Paul then explains that the gospel is true wisdom, but of a different kind. It is God's wisdom in a mystery, once hidden and now revealed, foreordained before the ages for the glory of believers. The rulers of this world missed it entirely; had they understood, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. Paul echoes Isaiah: what no eye has seen and no ear has heard, God has prepared for those who love him.
The key to this wisdom is the Holy Spirit. Just as only a person's spirit knows that person's thoughts, only God's Spirit knows the things of God. Believers have received the Spirit who is from God so they can understand what he has freely given. The natural person, without the Spirit, regards these truths as foolishness because they are spiritually discerned. Paul concludes that believers have the mind of Christ.
