Do This in Memory of Me

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul wrote, Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. Paul also gave the church directions about how to dress and act in worship in their day.

When the church met, they shared a meal and the Lord's Supper. But some people ate their own supper first. Some had plenty while others were hungry. Paul said this did not honor the Lord.

Paul told them what Jesus did the night He was betrayed. Jesus took bread and gave thanks. He said it was His body, broken for them. He took the cup too. Paul told them to examine their hearts and to wait for one another.

1 Corinthians 11 · Grade 4

Proclaiming the Lord's Death

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul begins by urging the Corinthians to imitate him as he imitates Christ. He then gives instructions about head coverings in public worship, following the customs of that culture. He reminds them that in the Lord, man and woman are not independent of each other, and all things are from God.

Next Paul addresses a painful problem. When the church gathered, there were divisions. At their shared meal, wealthier members ate their own supper first, and some even drank too much, while poorer members went hungry. Paul says this despised God's church and shamed those who had nothing.

Paul reminds them of the words of Jesus on the night He was betrayed. Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and broke it, saying it was His body for them. He took the cup, the new covenant in His blood. Whenever believers eat the bread and drink the cup, they proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. So each one should examine himself, take the meal seriously, and wait for one another.

  2. How were poorer members treated at the church meal?

  3. What did Jesus call the cup?

1 Corinthians 11 · Grade 5

Discerning the Body

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul's call to imitate him as he imitates Christ introduces two issues of public worship. The first concerns head coverings for men and women who pray or prophesy. Drawing on creation, custom, and nature, Paul urges the Corinthians to honor the distinctions of their culture in worship. He balances this with mutuality: in the Lord neither is independent of the other, for woman came from man and man comes through woman, and all things are from God. Christians today differ on how these instructions apply.

The second issue is more severe. The Lord's Supper was celebrated within a common meal. Paul hears that divisions exist among them (11:18). The well-off ate and drank freely before others arrived, while the poor went hungry. Paul says that what they eat is not truly the Lord's Supper, since they despise the church of God.

Paul answers with the tradition he received from the Lord: on the night Jesus was betrayed, He took bread and the cup and commanded His disciples to do this in remembrance of Him. The meal proclaims the Lord's death until He comes. To eat in an unworthy manner, without discerning the body, invites the Lord's discipline. Discerning the body includes recognizing the gathered church as Christ's body. So Paul concludes that each believer should examine himself, and that when the church comes together to eat, all should wait for one another.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Paul balance his instructions on head coverings?

  2. Why does Paul say their meal is not truly the Lord's Supper?

  3. What does the Lord's Supper proclaim?

  4. What does discerning the body include?
