1 Corinthians 11 · Grade 4

Proclaiming the Lord's Death

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul begins by urging the Corinthians to imitate him as he imitates Christ. He then gives instructions about head coverings in public worship, following the customs of that culture. He reminds them that in the Lord, man and woman are not independent of each other, and all things are from God.

Next Paul addresses a painful problem. When the church gathered, there were divisions. At their shared meal, wealthier members ate their own supper first, and some even drank too much, while poorer members went hungry. Paul says this despised God's church and shamed those who had nothing.

Paul reminds them of the words of Jesus on the night He was betrayed. Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and broke it, saying it was His body for them. He took the cup, the new covenant in His blood. Whenever believers eat the bread and drink the cup, they proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. So each one should examine himself, take the meal seriously, and wait for one another.

Think About It

  1. The Lord's Supper reminds believers of Jesus' love. How can remembering what Jesus did change the way you treat people at church?

  2. The Corinthians ignored the poor at their meal. Who might feel left out in your church or group, and how could you include them?
