A Way of Escape

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul told the Corinthians about Israel in the wilderness. God led them with a cloud and brought them through the sea. He gave them food and water. But many still turned to idols and grumbled.

Paul said these things happened as examples for God's people. Paul said, Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn't fall.

Paul said God is faithful. He will not let His people be tested more than they can stand. He will make a way of escape. Paul said, Whether therefore you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Memory Verse

“No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Do All to the Glory of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul points the Corinthians to Israel's story. All the Israelites were guided by the cloud, passed through the sea, and ate and drank what God supplied. Paul even says the rock that gave them water pictured Christ. Yet God was not pleased with many of them, because they turned to idols, tested the Lord, and grumbled.

These things were written as warnings. The Corinthians felt confident because of their knowledge and their baptism, but Paul warns that whoever thinks he stands should be careful not to fall. Still, there is hope. No temptation is unusual, and God is faithful. He provides a way of escape so believers can endure.

Paul tells them to flee idolatry. Believers share in Christ at the Lord's table, and they cannot also join in feasts for idols. In everyday choices, they should seek the good of their neighbor. Whether eating, drinking, or doing anything else, everything should be done to the glory of God.

Examples for Us

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul continues the discussion of idol food with a warning from Scripture. The Israelites enjoyed great privileges: the guiding cloud, the passage through the sea, the manna, and water from the rock, which Paul identifies with Christ. These experiences paralleled baptism and the Lord's Supper. Yet most of them displeased God through idolatry, immorality, testing the Lord, and grumbling, and they did not reach the promised land.

Paul draws the lesson. These events happened as examples and were written for the instruction of those on whom the ends of the ages have come. Spiritual privileges do not make anyone immune to falling. Overconfidence is dangerous. Yet the warning is joined to a promise. God is faithful, temptation is common to all, and God will provide a way of escape so that His people can endure.

Paul then applies this to temple feasts. Sharing the cup and bread unites believers with Christ and with one another as one body. Pagan sacrifices, though idols are nothing, are bound up with the worship of demons, and believers cannot share both tables. For ordinary meals, believers may eat with thanksgiving, but they should yield their freedom when it would harm another's conscience. Seeking the neighbor's good, they should do all to the glory of God and give no occasion for stumbling.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Israel's experiences in the wilderness parallel?

  2. What lesson does Paul draw from Israel's failure?

  3. What promise is joined to the warning?

  4. Why can't believers share both tables?
